What are Varicose Veins?

A varicose vein is an abnormally dilated blood vessel resulting from poor circulation. With poor circulation (venous insufficiency) blood incompletely returns to the heart allowing blood to pool in the leg veins. The increased pressure results in varicose veins.

Varicosities have an obvious appearance protruding from the surface of your skin. Varicosities often appear as purple, blue, or green dilations on the skin.

What Are Spider Veins?

Much smaller than varicose veins, spider veins can also indicate underlying venous insufficiency. They appears as clusters of tiny, web-like vessels most commony on the thighs, calves and ankles.

Spider veins are related to genetics, hormonal influences, and are more common in females. Treatment is effective with sclerotherapy, however in some cases testing for underlying conditions is advised.

      What is Venous Insufficiency?

Blood flow in the leg veins has to work against the pull of gravity. This constant pressure adds to the stress on the normal function of our leg veins.

One-way valves in the veins act to direct blood in the right direction, towards the heart, and prevent it from flowing backwards. Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in veins begin to leak and allow blood to flow backwards (reflux) and pool. This increases the pressure inside the veins and over time this can result in spider veins and varicose veins.
